What does Sociestat collect?
For our website to work we make use of a number of data items, including:
- Location: This is based on the reported location of your device at the time of your submission. Before we can collect this information your browser will ask for your consent. To help with privacy we only display responses on our website for the last 6 hours and to a precision of approximately 111m1.
- IP Address: We access and temporarily store your IP address in a number of instances. Our primary use for this is to calculate your location should you have denied consent for us to access your browser reported location. We may also store your IP address for site security purposes but won't do for any longer than is necessary.
- Timestamp: To allow us to keep track of who has provided a response and when, we store the UTC time at which you provided your response.
- The response: Your response, along with all of the above, is what makes our service work. By submitting a response you agree for us to aggregate your response with a location and timestamp. Beyond these items there is nothing that attributes your response to you.
What is Sociestat's policy on cookies?
Cookies are small files used by websites and web apps (collectively referred to as web applications henceforth) that helps analyse web traffic and enhance experience. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information, in your browser, about your preferences.
Sociestat uses two forms of cookies, first party - those created and set by us, and third party - those created and set by the services we use. First party cookies allow us to a) provide you with a better experience within our web application and, b) protect our services against overload with session state control. We make use of technologies such as Google Analytics, which in turn sets third party cookies, to help monitor the usage and behaviours of those using our web application. You can read about Google's policy on privacy here.
By continuing to use our web application you agree to cookies being set on your device. First party cookies must be enabled to submit a response through our site whilst third party cookies are optional. If you are having trouble submitting a response to the worlds happiness map, please check your browser privacy settings to ensure that cookies are enabled for this domain.
How does Sociestat use the data it collects?
At Sociestat we use your data to populate our world happiness map and to support researchers. Organisations have the right to purchase a copy of the data we collect, for a given time period, as long as they comply with some basic privacy rules. First and foremost, any person/persons accessing this data MUST do so in such a way that no individual could be identified. This prohibits the aggregation of our data with other sources to identify an individual respondent.
